I bought two Umbrel servers, mainly to use as backup for photos, files and other things at home in two different houses. Various AIs answered that it should be possible to run it as a home lab with IPv6, but as everyone knows: AI can get things wrong! 😋
Umbrel works for backup, but unfortunately the whole setup and the virtual machine features are entirely IPv4-only.
So from an IPv6 point of view they get 0 out of a possible 10 points. A support ticket has been opened.
I made my first presentation slide about IPv6 back in 1998, for a course on TCP/IP. (By the way, why wasn't it called UDP/IP? :)) Even then, IPv4 address exhaustion was a known problem. At a RIPE training course in 2000, they said the last blocks would be handed out to the regional internet registries, the RIRs, in 10 to 15 years. They were spot on: in 2011 IANA handed out the last blocks.
Even so, progress is still too slow. We need more knowledge about IPv6 and about how we move forward. An internet built on IPv4 alone stops developing, and we only become more dependent on the big cloud giants.
I started with IPv6 on, among other machines, ns.interlan.se via 6bone, moved on to SixXS and eventually got my own PI addresses. ns.interlan.se has had an AAAA record for maybe 25 years now, I don't know exactly. :)
IPv6 is not dangerous, but you need to know what you are doing. NAT and good old IPv4 do not give you any extra security; that comes from the firewall's stateful inspection. More on that in the articles here on the site.
The site is also available in English, but much of what is written here is about Sweden. A large part of the problem with getting IPv6 into homes and businesses comes from the utterly lousy Swedish business model with communication operators, where the company that sells the subscription is not the one that runs the network.
xxxxx is a consumer product, and IPv6 is not something generally used by "ordinary mortals". Instead, IPv6 is something used at larger companies precisely for security. As for IPv6 and the "experience", such as things supposedly being faster and better now, it works pretty much as well with IPv4 as with IPv6 here. IPv6 is also not something internet service providers offer as standard, but something you have to order as an extra. Having it enabled from the start can also cause problems in some environments and with some internet service providers. So there are reasons why it is turned off by default. Even though it is 2026, CGNAT is used to solve the problem of IPv4 and IP addresses running out.
